Nritya makes use of the language of gestures and facial expressions in order to convey sentiments and feelings and bring forth the meaning of a song. The art of communicating with the use of gestures is Abhinaya. The form of abhinaya is the foundation of Rasa that is discussed below and constitutes an essential aspect of dance.
Rasa or Emotion
“ Yato hastah tato drishtih yato dristih tato manah
Yato manah tato bhavo yato bhavah tato rasah “
Wither the hand goes, the eyes go, the mind goes, the feeling is aroused and when the feeling is aroused the taste arises.
The enjoyment on the part of both the actors and spectators relies there on aspects of the production such as sentiments (Rasa) and psychological states (bhava) rather than a rigid measure of what is right and wrong. Rasa is an essential element of Indian dancing.
There are eight different kinds of sentiments called the navarasa:
Love - shringara
Laughter - hasya
Compassion – karuna
Anger – raudra
Valour – vira
Fear – bhaya
